Our BA Modern Languages allows you to develop proficiency in three foreign languages. Your study will also involve exploring cultural, social, historical and linguistic issues related to the languages you are studying and the areas of the world in which they are spoken.
This course is for proven talented linguists and allows you to study three languages. Two must be at advanced level and one can be from scratch. Choose from French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, English, Chinese, Japanese and Russian. Except for English, all the languages can be studied from scratch. You may choose one or two option modules per semester relating to the languages you are studying. You will spend your third year abroad in a French, German, Italian, Spanish or Portuguese-speaking country.
Modern languages and linguistics at Southampton is ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of our research (REF 2014). Teaching and learning is supported by three research centres, Transnational Studies, Global Englishes and Applied Language Research.
